Recipe - Classic Hummus and Whole Wheat Pita Style Chips

I strongly believe eating healthy and wholesome food shouldn't be difficult. It just requires a good understanding of nutrition and its sources and planning around it.  Today we have access to all kinds of processed food that promote the quick and fast food eating culture and lets face it, it is easy to fall into that trap. In our fast paced lives, cooking can become one more gruesome task on that never ending to-do list and on such occasions it is only natural to fall back on take outs and fast food. Unfortunately, these foods are high in in carbohydrates and trans fats which contribute to various health issues in the long term.

But eating healthy, home cooked meals can be an easy and stress free if we can spend a couple of hours per week planning for it. Planning takes the decision making fatigue out of our daily lives and makes speedy execution the only task of the day. I have been following this weekly planning for a few weeks now and one of the regular dishes on my weekly plans is the classic hummus. I've been making hummus for many years now and have tried several flavors of it (Beet, basil etc.) but the classic style is a great base and versatile accompaniment in many meals.

But today I have for you not just the recipe for hummus but also for another quick easy side that is not just easy to make but is super healthy! Presenting to you - crispy and healthy whole wheat pita style chips made from regular  left over rotis/Chapatis. Yes, it takes less than 5 minutes to make it and is possibly more crispy than the store bought ones, not to mention a lot more healthy! So without much ado, here it goes!

Classic Hummus Recipe

Ingredients:

1 cup boiled chickpeas - skin removed
1 tablespoon tahini
1 medium sized lemon - juice squeezed
2 tablespoons olive oil
2-3 pods garlic peeled
Salt as needed
A splash of water

In a food processor, blitz the chickpeas a few times. Then add the remaining ingredients and blitz till it comes to a smooth consistency. Transfer the contents to a bowl and top with added condiments. I added Zatar and smoked paprika both of which pair with the hummus very well.

Whole Wheat Pita Style Chips Recipe

Ingredients:

2-3 whole wheat rotis/chapatis
1 tsp oil  ( use an oil spray or a brush)

Cut the rotis into strips and then into squares. Now heat a pan and spray some oil on it. let the pan and the oil heat up. Make sure the flame is on high. Once hot, add the roti squares in batches (of 1 roti) and spread them evenly onto the pan. The high heat of the pan will quickly crisp up the roti squares and they will start developing brown spots. Start tossing the pan holding the handle so that the squares move around and both sides crisp up evenly. Transfer them to a wide plate and spread them apart and they will crisp up even further as they cool down. Repeat this process for the remaining roti squares in batches.

Serve hot with the hummus! :)
